Mid Year Empties

Normally I do an empties post every couple of months but this year I have decided to do a mid-year empties and at the end of the year I will do one which will cover the final six months. I have to say I am always surprised by how little I use up when I keep track of it which is why I have extend the time period of when I write them. Personally empties posts aren't my favourite to read but I do like knowing if someone would repurchase a product or not. I think it is very telling if someone would buy a product again. There are so many products on the market that quite frankly you would have to love something to limit yourself that one product.

Looking at my empties from the past 6 months I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of skincare I have used up as it has been my beauty goal for the year to learn more about skincare. I'm not going to say much more as this is going to be a lengthy post as it is, so lets get into it.

Usually I have quite a few empty perfume bottles but over the past 6 months I have only finished two bottles. I have bought quite a few over the past few months so I have been using new ones rather than using up older ones. Both of the perfumes I have finished come from Jo Malone London, which is easily my top perfume brand. Both of them were limited edition scents but one is currently available so I will start with that one.

Sakura Cherry Blossom

I bought this back in 2015 as part of the Blue Skies and Blossom collection but it is currently back as part of the Blossom Girls collection. At first I loved this scent and I used it all the time but over the years I have fallen out of love with it and in the end I had to make a conscious effort to use it up. This is a very light scent with a very clean/fresh undertone to it. In a way it is a bit like if you combined Wood Sage and Sea Salt and Peony and Blush Suede but not quite as floral as that combo. I can't say I would buy this again but I will most definitely be keeping the pink lid to put on my other perfumes.

Poppy & Barley

Poppy & Barley was a new limited edition this year as part of the Jo Malone London Brit Collection, it was easily my favourite scent from the range and the packaging and visuals for the collection were stunning. I've already finished this bottle and I only bought it back in February. Luckily I bought a back-up bottle whilst it was still available as this is up there with my favourite scents. When you first spray it, it is very creamy and the Barley comes through quite strong but the longer it is on, the more the soft florals come out and that is when I fall for this scent. I adore this scent and I can't believe I am going to have to ration it. Once again I will be taking the lid from this bottle and I will move it to a different bottle; normally you have to pay £4 for a coloured cap and you can only buy them in the Regent Street store. If this ever comes back I will definitely be repurchasing and I would potentially buy more than one just so I never run out.

Moving on from perfume, brings us into body care. I thought this would be the next logical step as a lot of these products are scented and a lot of them are from Jo Malone London. If you can't tell from the amount of body cream I have used over the past six months, I have really been preparing my body for tanning season and trying to keep it in the best condition possible.

Jo Malone London - Body Creme

I love the Jo Malone London Body Cremes and I am seriously sad that I have finished quite a few tubs this year. The first one I finished was Mimosa and Cardamom which is my comfort scent for Autumn/Winter. To me it is like being wrapped up in a warm blanket due to the vanilla notes in the base. The formula of the Jo Malone Body Cremes is amazing; they are super nourishing, thick but they sink in quickly. I used this up towards the start of the year. Since then I have also used up a mini Wood Sage and Sea Salt Body Creme which was supposed to be for my holiday but I didn't end up taking it away with me. I have been using it on the days that I am applying tan as this moisturises my skin but doesn't leave a residue. I have also used up 2 of the Peony and Blush Suede deluxe samples. The deluxe sample size is great to dip into when you are actually applying your tan but you need a little bit of cream on problem areas so that the tan doesn't settle too much. I currently have a tub of the full size Peony and Blush Suede Body Creme on the go. I have no doubt that after I have finished this Body Creme, I will buy a new one but the scent will vary depending on the time of year.

2x Sol De Janerio - Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

The start of this year saw me finally use the Sol De Janerio Brazilian Bum Bum Cream that had been sat in my draw since my Black Friday Selfridges shop. If you can't tell by the fact that I have now finished two tubs, I love this cream. I have to say I am not sold on the cellulite busting claims but this does make your skin look incredible whilst scenting it with a perfect tropical, holiday scent. The cream itself feels very luxurious and it does have an almost blurring effect on the skin. One thing to note is that this does contain glitter. It isn't that obvious but when I am making myself a brew in the kitchen at work, I can always see it very clearly in the dodgy artificial lighting. The glitter has not stopped my love of this product and I now understand why so many people have continuously raved about this butter. Of course I will be buying a new tub of this, even though it is bloody expensive.

Lush - Body Conditioner

I always do a massive Lush shop at the beginning of October when the Winter limited editions are first launched and this year one product in particular impressed me which was the Buck's Fizz Body Conditioner. At the beginning of the year I was using this religiously as it is so much easier than using a cream during Winter. You can use this in the shower so you do not have to apply a cream in the already freezing temperatures of British Winter. At the beginning of the year I used up a small tub of this body conditioner and I actually still have a large one sat in my collection. I am saving it for colder weather which is when I prefer to use this type of product. I really hope Lush bring this scent back because it is really refreshing and very citrusy but as there was so much of this left in the Christmas sale I am not holding out much hope to see this product's return.

I haven't really used up too much body care, I have had the same massive bottle of Lush Shower Gel on the go since about March which was when I finished the Nivea Shower Mousse. I did not keep a hold the Nivea Shower Mousse bottle as it was quite messy after being in my shower for a couple of months. Moving on, we are now looking at makeup empties. If you are a regular reader, you will know I have been testing out mascaras as one of my beauty goals for the year so there are quite a few in this section.

Too Faced -  Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara

The Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara kicked off my mascara adventures for this year and I can't say it was a very successful start. In fact I did not like it at all. I can't think of another mascara which has created black smudges around my eyes quite like this mascara did. I had to keep using it as I do not like to waste product and I wanted to see if it improved over time, it didn't. I will not be buying this mascara again and you can read my full review here: Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara

L'Oreal - Miss Baby Roll Mascara

Last years mascara success story was the L'Oreal Miss Baby Roll Mascara which I discovered in May last year and continued to buy tube after tube of for the rest of the year. This does create small smudges but it isn't every day. This gives your lashes volume, separation and length. This mascara has given me the least amount of grief since I stopped using the Tom Ford Extreme Mascara which I used for a number of years. Despite wanting to try new mascaras this year, I ended up buying a tube of this to try and make using the Waterproof Better Than Sex mascara bearable. It kind of worked but in the end I stopped using the Too Faced mascara and used this on it's own. I would definitely buy this mascara again and I would also encourage you to give it a go, if you like that baby doll lash look.

Too Faced - Better Than Sex Mascara (Original)

Following on from my disaster with the Waterproof version I thought I would test the original Better Than Sex to see if I got on with that a little bit better. I sort of did and I sort of didn't. This didn't create black smudges quite as badly as the Waterproof version but it also did not make my lashes look as good as the Waterproof one. Once again I deemed this as a fail as well. I did a longer comparison post here: Too Faced Better Than Sex This was only a small tube so I didn't have to use this for as long as the Waterproof version but still it was too long.

Marc Jacobs - Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara

I literally finished the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume mascara about 2 weeks ago. This is easily the best mascara I have tried this year which if you can't tell was not a hard achievement. I ended up taking this mascara on holiday with me instead of the Too Faced mascara as I could not have my lashes looking like crap on a girls holiday! Everything about this mascara was exactly what I was looking for, it gives good volume, good length, created a more chunky looking lash without being clumpy. My one problem with this mascara is that it would flake, some days this wouldn't be major but if I cried that would be the end of my mascara. I would actually buy this mascara again as I did like the finish but if I were to buy it again I would make sure that I had a lash primer just to make sure it sticks to my lashes.

2x Fenty Beauty - Pro Filt'r Foundation in 140

Yes, that's right two bottles of the Fenty Beauty Foundation. That is easily my only criticism of this foundation, you really do get through it quickly. This is a buildable foundation and I like a good coverage so I use 3 pumps of this foundation each day. The Fenty Foundation is quite thin so it does take a little bit of building to get it more full coverage but once you've got it to the coverage you like, this looks incredible and it lasts well. The Fenty foundation gives a semi-matte finish which almost makes your skin look like velvet. They have a massive shade range and 140 is the perfect colour for me. I find it does oxidise a little bit so that is something to bare in mind but I highly recommend this foundation and I have another bottle on the go now.

Tom Ford - Lips and Boys

I have quite a few of the Tom Ford Lips and Boys as they are a slightly cheaper way of introducing yourself to Tom Ford lipsticks. Even though they are smaller, I had never used one up before but that all changed this year. My favourite shade out of the ones I own is probably Addision which is why it is the first one I have finished. It is a pale, cool toned pink which I love for Spring/Summer. It has a satin finish so it makes my lips look fuller whilst giving them a hint of baby pink. When I am in need of this sort of shade I will hands down go back to Tom Ford to buy this lipstick, it is stunning. I always reach for this lipstick so I am gutted to not be able to use it at the moment.

Skincare is easily the biggest section of this post which fills me with joy as it does show that I am making an effort with skincare, which is my beauty goal for 2018 (alongside trying as many mascaras as I can.) I've always struggled with my knowledge of skincare as it is so scientific but I did really enjoy science and more specifically chemistry whilst I was at school so this should be right up my street. The more I have learnt about skincare, the more interesting I've realised it is and I've also noticed an improvement in my skin.

Garnier - 2 in 1 Eye Makeup Remover

Let's get the most boring product out of the way first, an eye makeup remover. This is a cheap and effective makeup remover. It takes away all of my mascara without too much effort. I am very aware that you shouldn't mess around with your eyes too much as the skin is very delicate but I wear contact lense so unfortunately I do have to move the skin around a bit so I like to use a makeup remover that doesn't bother my eyes too much. Using this product on a cotton bud, I leave it on my eye for about a minute, do one wipe, and it will have removed most of my mascara. That is all I want in a eye makeup remover so I do keep buying this and I will continue to buy it.

The White Company - Super Balm

I used this up closer to the start of the year so I will be honest, it seems odd to be talking about it now. Plus I can't really remember what using this product was like. I know it was a very thin balm, not really a balm at all but it worked to remove my base makeup. This cleanser was the reason I started to buy the Garnier eye makeup remover, as I couldn't use the balm on my eyes. It took way too much effort and meant I had to rub my eyes a lot to get rid of it which was something I didn't want to do. I didn't mind this cleanser, it worked, but for £25 I did feel that was quite a lot considering I could only use this to remove my base makeup.

Glamglow - Gravitymud Mask

From a product that I wasn't too fussed by, to one I completely love. I've spoken about the Glamglow Gravitymud masks quite a few times as I basically buy every version they launch. I've had the Sonic Version (which is also an empty) and I am currently using the Glitter Mask but I have to say the original will always be my favourite. I feel like the original gives the best results. I don't think this mask gives amazing results for how much it costs but I do love this as an easy peel off mask that looks good for Instagram. I have done a full review which goes into more detail of the mask which might be better to read if you want my full opinion on this mask, Glamglow: Gravitymud. I have a second Sonic mini mask which I am yet to open and, as I said, I have the Glitter Mask which I am slowly making my way through.

Estee Lauder - Advanced Night Repair

Would this even be an empties post without a bottle of ANR? I have been using Advanced Night Repair for years and I swear by it. It is an anti-ageing serum but it also helps with any other skin concerns you have. As I use this so regularly I don't always see the positive effects of this serum but I always notice when I have been on holiday and I haven't been able to use this serum; my skin always looks more lifeless when I get back. I had already bought another bottle before I had run out of this one, I literally cannot be without this serum.

The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid

I use ANR before I go to bed but for the mornings I have been using The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid. No matter what your thoughts are on the owner of Deciem, they make some killer products and I really enjoyed using the Hyaluronic Acid. I did notice a difference in my skin when I first started using the Hyaluronic Acid and I have noticed a different since I ran out of this bottle. My skin definitely seems more dull so it is nice to know that it actually works. At 25 I still naturally produce Hyaluronic Acid so I do not need a high concentration but anyone closer to 30 might want something stronger than this. I already have another bottle of this that I am waiting to crack open as I worried I wouldn't be able to get my hands on it when I needed it. This Hyaluronic Acid spends most of its time sold out, pretty much anywhere it is stocked online, so last time I was in London I stopped at the Deciem store to buy a back up. The reason I haven't opened my next bottle is because I am actually using the Marine Hyaluronics to see what the differences are. I will be doing a full post soon so keep an eye out if you want to find out more about the two products.

Kiehl's - Creamy Eye Treatment

Moving away from serums and into the moisturisers I use after a serum. I have finally finished my first tub of the Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment. I had been using this for well over a year which your not supposed to do. If you are thinking about buying this I would suggest going for the smaller tub as you actually might use it up before the best before date. I used this everyday both morning and night and I did not get through it very quickly. This is very thick so you only need a small amount and you need to warm it before you apply it to your eye area or it will never sink in. When I first started using this I was struggling with dry eyes but this eye cream sorted that out. My eye area has not been a problem since I started using this. I highly recommend giving this a go, it is a hyped product for a reason.

Liz Earle - Skin Repair Moisturiser

I originally bought this with the intention of using it in the mornings but it ended up being my night cream as it is quite thick. It does leave a residue and that is why I stopped using it in the morning as I worried that it was disrupting my makeup. This is designed for normal/combo skin which is my skin type. I did actually like this and I know quite a few of my friends use this as well. I always struggle to get excited about a moisturiser as there isn't really much to notice about them but I did like this one. I won't rush out to buy it again as I know there are others I would like to try but this is one I would consider buying again.

Skincare Deluxe Samples

I've decided to do a dedicated section to deluxe samples I have finished as I have spoken about starting to use some of these products but I haven't always done a full review of them. Plus the packaging is in my empties bag so I feel like I have gone to the effort of saving them from going straight into the bin so I am going to talk about them.

Emma Hardie - Moringa Cleansing Balm

I received my first small pot of the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm in the Marks and Spencer Beauty Advent Calendar from last year and from the moment I tried it, I fell in love with this cleanser. I was desperate to try this as literally everyone raves about it and it did not disappoint. It takes off every scrap of make up and it conditions the skin as it does it. If you suffer from dry skin, this would be an incredible cleanser to try. I have bought another small pot of this cleanser as I wanted to take it away with me when I went to Nice. I think it is important to take a cleanser that you know works and I knew this works for all of my makeup. One day I will buy the full size but I have so many other cleansers that I have open at the moment, I want to get rid of some of those before I start buying more.

L'Occitane Aqua Reotier

I received a small pot of this from the Glamour Beauty Club so I have written a full review on this, Glamour Beauty Club: L'Occitane Aqua Reotier if you want to read it. I love this product. It is new from L'Occitane and it is a cooling, hydrating, restorative gel. During the Summer this would be an amazing gel to use in the mornings, alongside a Hyaluronic Acid. I had low expectations when this was the sample offered to me from the Glamour Beauty Club but this was such a good recommendation. I will be buying this as soon as my morning moisturiser runs out.

Glamglow - Supercleanse

I don't often pay attention to Instagram ads but there was an ad to try the new cleansing products from Glamglow so I applied for a sample. I decided to try the Supercleanse which is a cream to foam cleanser, it said it was best for normal-oily skin which seemed most relevant to my skin type. At first I wasn't sure about this but the more I made my way through the tube, the more I enjoyed it. You can't use this on your eyes, and you apply it to damp skin, so naturally this lends itself to a second cleanse but for a second cleanse this is a really good product. It contains charcoal which helps with spots (something I am currently struggling with) and it makes your skin feel clean. I would buy this but once again it isn't something I would rush out to get.

This post does seem quite long but I have to say I did think I would have used more products over six months. Of course I may have used up more products and thrown away the packaging but they can't have been that important if I have done that. There are also standard products which I use lots of like shampoo and conditioner which I don't think anyone would have any interest in and there would simply be too many to write about. There won't be another empties for the next six months but I am seriously hoping I will finish more products by the end of the year. My collection is currently out of hand and it needs to shrink. I hope you enjoyed this post and maybe even found a product you would like to try out of it.
